How to use My Shows V2

Your list is kept in your own GitHub Gist, so it's the same on your iPhone, iPad and Mac.

V2 is a separate app from My Shows V1 (myshows.fyi), and V1 keeps working as before. To bring your V1 list across, download a backup in V1, then in V2 go to Settings › Backup & restore › Choose backup file. It replaces whatever is in your V2 list. Shows with no "Watching on" platform, or saved by a much older version of V1, are left out and listed afterwards so you can add them again.

Connecting for the first time

  1. Create a classic GitHub token with only the gist scope (step-by-step instructions). Keep it in your password manager or Notes.
  2. Open My Shows, paste the token and tap Connect.
  3. My Shows creates a secret gist called My Shows V2 in your GitHub account to hold your list. You don't need to create or name anything yourself.

Don't delete that gist on GitHub: it is your list.

Your other devices

On each other device, open My Shows, paste a token from the same GitHub account and tap Connect. The app finds your My Shows gist and loads your list.

Adding a show

  1. Tap Add Show in the bar at the bottom.
  2. Search for the show by name. Results come from TVmaze's free database. Shows already in your list are marked with the group they're in.
  3. Tap the show to select it.
  4. Enter where you're watching it (Hulu, Netflix, whatever you use). This is required.
  5. Choose where you're up to:
    • Starting — you'll start from the first episode.
    • Season/Episode last watched — enter the season and episode you last watched.
    • Caught Up (the default) — every episode that has aired is marked watched. Use this for a show you're waiting on to return: it goes to Waiting, or to Done if the series has ended.
  6. Tap Add show. My Shows puts it in the right group, takes you there, highlights it, and confirms where it went.

If you chose the wrong option, delete the show and add it again.

Watching, Waiting and Done

The three boxes at the top of the main screen show one group at a time, with the number of shows in each. Shows move between groups on their own as episodes air.

Watching

The next episode you haven't watched has already aired. Tap "Mark watched" and it moves straight to the following episode. It has two sections. Currently running shows lists shows still in production, the most recently released episode at the top. Ended shows I'm binging lists series that have ended which you're still working through: one you've just marked watched moves to the bottom, and the others move up in turn.

Waiting

Two sections. Waiting for next episode or season: you're caught up and the show is still in production; shows with a known air date come first, with a countdown. Suspended: shows you've paused (see below). The Waiting count includes both.

Done

The series has ended and you've watched every episode. A show that has ended but still has episodes you haven't watched stays in Watching.

Searching your list

Type in the search box at the top of the main screen. Results come from all three groups, each tagged with the group it's in. Clear the box to go back to the group you were looking at.

Going back or skipping an episode

On a show's detail screen, below Mark watched:

A message confirms where you're now up to, and the show moves to Watching, Waiting or Done to match. The buttons aren't shown for a suspended show.

Suspending a show

Want to stop tracking a show without losing your place? Open the show and tap Suspend series.

To pick it back up, tap Reactivate on its row (or "Reactivate series" on its detail screen). It returns to whichever group its progress puts it in.

Deleting a series

On the show's detail screen, Suspend series and Delete series sit next to each other.

Tapping Delete series immediately removes the show and its watch history. There's no confirmation step and no undo, and within a few seconds it's gone from all your devices. If you might want the show back later, use Suspend instead.

Sync status and fixing sync problems

The badge at the top right always shows the sync status. Tap it to open Settings › Sync.

Disconnect this device removes your token and list from this device only; your gist keeps the list and connecting again loads it back.
